There is a difference in the method of fat removal by laser liposuction compared to standard liposuction surgery. Traditionally, liposuction involved mechanical trauma to break up fat cells and a tube to suck out the fat. The amount of force used to break up the fat cells can cause problems to the surrounding tissue of the area being treated. Laser liposuction is a much gentler technique in which a small fiber optic needle is inserted to the area and a laser is used to generate heat which melts the fat cells.

This method of using a laser causes less stress and avoids potential complications such as injury to internal organs and excessive bruising or bleeding. In fact, one of the biggest problems with traditional liposuction is the amount of blood loss during the procedure. Laser liposuction minimizes this problem because the technique is more accurate and less brutal in its destruction of fat cells. Any small amount of blood that might leak from damaged capillaries usually evaporates and dries up from the heat.

Liposuction Side Effects

Most of the negative side effects of liposuction occur after the surgery. It is during recovery that signs of poor practice will really begin to show. Fat cells are about 25% water and coupled with the bleeding from damaged blood vessels there is a lot of fluid that needs to be drained before the incision can be closed up.

Common problems arise from improper drainage of the treated area such as skin discoloration which is a result of blood leaked from damaged vessels pooling under the skin. Although the side effect is temporary it can be scary for patients to see funny things happen to their bodies. Since laser liposuction minimizes the amount of blood loss and damage to blood vessels and nearby tissue, the chances of developing such problems is also greatly reduced. That is just one of the many benefits of laser liposuction.

Another reason laser liposuction is regarded as relatively safer than traditional liposuction is the small scale in treatment area. Common problems that can occur when too much fat is removed during liposuction are skin irregularities. It usually happens when too much fat is not removed in one session so neither doctor nor patient has a chance to see the incremental results of the procedure which is important. The way to avoid this is simply by taking small amounts per session so that there isn't too much removal in one session. The small scale that laser liposuction works means that the chances of skin irregularities are also minimal. In fact, laser liposuction is often used in small areas like the face or arms while skin irregularities is a common problem in large areas like the abdomen.

Laser Lipo and Side Effects

Since the tools used in laser liposuction are smaller in size than the traditional liposuction technique, there is a much smaller incision required to perform the procedure. This means less potential for scarring and even more importantly, less chance of an infection to the incision area.

Some positive side effects of laser liposuction that traditional liposuction doesn't offer comes from the heat of the laser. Many patients benefit from the side effect of the heat which causes the skin to tighten. It can also improve cellulite because of the effect the heat has on the skin.

The advantages of laser liposuction begins at the very start of the procedure where only local anesthesia is required which is good on many levels, to the post-surgery recovery timeline. Patients of laser liposuction have much shorter recovery time required meaning they can get back to their normal lives in a matter of days depending on the size of the area that was treated. Traditional liposuction patients usually have longer recovery times beginning with approximately two weeks depending on the individual case.

Don't let them fool you! I did laser lipo on my abdomen, flanks, inner thighs, chin/neck. The abdomen was so painful- there is no way that you will go back to work in 1 day. I took 3 days off and could of used more. Surgeons always minimize downtime and pain- it hurt! But the results were definitely worth it- I lost 3 inches off my waist overnight, even with the gross amount of swelling involved.
