There is more to finding the right liposuction surgeon than simply shopping for the lowest possible liposuction price. Many clinics that advertise amazingly low prices fail to disclose that there are other fees and charges that are not included. The final bill for the procedure might be the first time the client learns about the fees and by then it is too late to undo the treatment. Usually there is a reason the surgeon must advertise ridiculously low prices in the first place and it is very risky for anyone to put their lives in the hands of any surgeon to begin with. In the end a seemingly low cost liposuction service can easily end up costing more in terms of both money and more importantly your health.

Advertised Price

Most advertisements that feature liposuction for several hundred dollars are only quoting a tiny fraction of the total cost of liposuction. Usually this is the surgeon fee which is what the doctor will charge for his or her service. There are a number of other fees involved that many clinics charge to cover their own expenses. Anesthesia is a big fee and the patient will be charged for the amount of drug that is required for the procedure. The problem is that many surgical complications arise from the improper administration of anesthesia. That is why a board certified anesthesiologist is required for higher doses such as general anesthesia and that is why it can be so expensive for this part of the surgery. Then there is the facility fee that the clinic will charge. This is for the use of the surgery room as well as any equipment that is required to perform the procedure. The clinic will look to cover their expenses for the overhead and material through these fees and it may not always be disclosed upfront. This is also the difference between getting an estimate over the phone, which can be only the surgeon’s fee, and getting a real quote in writing.

Surgeon Fees

A surgeon will usually be forced to lower his or her rates relative to other surgeons in the area for a number of reason and they usually are not good. If a surgeon does not have enough happy clients in the past that would recommend his or her services because of blotched results he or she may use price as a way to lure new customers. It could be that the surgeon does not have all the proper certifications or it is possible to have cosmetic surgery certifications but for different types of procedures that are unrelated to liposuction. Sometimes the surgeon is properly trained but does not have the experience and is trying to start his or her own practice. This is still a risk because sculpting the body is as much art as it is science and the skill improves with practice.

Properly certified liposuction surgeons will have gone through rigorous training and examinations. It is okay to ask to see the surgeon’s credentials and certifications as any surgeon would be proud to show them off. But the most important thing is the experience and references from past clients. A good surgeon cares about the well being of his or her patients and would have no problem passing up a couple thousand dollars if that means preventing a non-eligible client from receiving the treatment. It is important to have someone you can trust when going under the knife and it is important for a patient to feel comfortable undergoing such a procedure.

The real cost savings is getting things done right. A good liposuction surgeon will make sure the client does not have unrealistic expectations and knows exactly what they are getting into. Trying to save money by going to a poorly qualified surgeon can end up costing more if another treatment is required so that the new surgeon can fix problems caused by the previous surgeon.
